How far is Merzouga from Fez?

About 470 kilometres, roughly 7 to 8 hours of driving. This journey splits the drive with nights in Midelt on the way there and Azrou on the way back, so you never do it in one go.

Why two nights in the desert?

Two nights let you see both sunset and sunrise without rushing, with a full day in the dunes for sandboarding, a 4x4 excursion, a nomad family visit and Gnawa music in Khamlia. It's often the part of the trip travellers remember most.

What is included at the luxury desert camp?

Two nights in a private tent with a proper bed, with dinner and breakfast both days. The camp also includes the sunset camel trek, sandboarding, the 4x4 excursion, the nomad family visit and the Gnawa music experience.

When is the best time to go?

March to May and late September to November offer the most comfortable desert weather. Winter brings clear, sunny days but cold desert nights, and possible snow in the Middle Atlas. In summer, Merzouga is very hot, so we plan activities for early morning and evening.

Day-by-day itinerary

Climb into the Middle Atlas to Ifrane, the alpine-style town at around 1,650 metres, for a walk among its chalets and gardens. In the cedar forests near Azrou, stop to watch wild Barbary macaques. Then cross the high plateaus to Midelt, beneath the snowy peaks of Jbel Ayachi. Horse riding, an ATV ride or a mountain lunch can be added. Overnight in Midelt. Drive: about 3.5 to 4 hours with stops.

Follow the Ziz Valley south, with panoramic stops above its long ribbon of palm groves, then continue through Erfoud, known for its fossils, to Merzouga. Your first sight of the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi is unforgettable. At sunset, ride a camel into the dunes to your luxury desert camp, where dinner is served under the stars. Overnight in a luxury desert camp. Drive: about 4 to 5 hours with stops.

Wake early for sunrise over the dunes. Then spend the day exploring the Sahara: sandboarding, a 4x4 excursion around Erg Chebbi, tea with a nomad family, and Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, whose families trace their roots to West Africa.
