When is the best time to visit northern Morocco?

Spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November) are ideal, with green mountains, mild coastal weather and fewer crowds. Summer is pleasant on the coast but busy. Winter brings more rain to the Rif.

Is this tour suitable for older travellers?

Yes. Most drives are short, the guided walks are at an easy pace, and you stay in each town long enough to enjoy it. Chefchaouen has stairs and slopes, so your guide plans the route around your comfort.

Day-by-day itinerary

Your driver meets you at Fez airport or your hotel. In the evening, a local guide takes you through the historic gates and lanes of Fez el-Bali, Morocco's oldest imperial medina and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A hammam, a welcome dinner or rooftop tea at sunset can be added. Overnight in Fez.

Drive north into the Rif Mountains, through olive country and small villages, to Chefchaouen, the blue-washed town tucked beneath the peaks. Your local guide leads an orientation walk through its streets and stairways. A sunset hike to the Spanish Mosque, a photography session or a cooking class can be added. Overnight in Chefchaouen. Drive: 3.5 to 4 hours.

Descend through the Rif to Tetouan, whose medina, built by Andalusian refugees, is one of the most complete in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guide shows you its white houses, its artisan quarters and the craft traditions that still thrive here. Fancy an early start? A morning visit to the Akchour waterfalls can be added. Overnight in Tetouan. Drive: 1.5 to 2 hours.

Follow the Mediterranean coast to Tangier, the storied port where Africa faces Europe across the Strait of Gibraltar. With your guide, explore the Kasbah and the outside of the Kasbah Museum, the medina and the Grand Socco, then walk the seafront corniche. The American Legation or a sunset café can be added. Overnight in Tangier. Drive: about 1.5 hours.

Visit Cap Spartel, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, and the Caves of Hercules, whose sea opening is shaped like a map of Africa. Then follow the ocean south to Asilah, a whitewashed town of murals and Portuguese ramparts, for a guided walk. A beach camel ride, horse riding or seafood lunch can be added. Overnight in Asilah. Drive: about 1 hour in total.
