How far is Merzouga from Casablanca?

About 800 kilometres by the southern route. This journey splits the distance over several days, through the High Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge, then returns by a different road through the Middle Atlas, so you never drive the same way twice.

What is included in the desert days?

Two nights in a luxury desert camp with dinner and breakfast, a sunset camel trek, sandboarding, a 4x4 excursion, a nomad family visit and a Gnawa music experience. Quad biking and buggies are optional extras.

Are the driving days very long?

Days two, three and five are long drives, but they cover some of Morocco's most spectacular scenery, with regular stops for views, photos, tea and visits. If you'd prefer shorter days, we can add a night in Marrakech or the Dades Valley.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara?

March to May and late September to November bring warm days and comfortable nights. December to February is sunny but cold after dark, so pack warm layers. In summer, desert afternoons often exceed 40°C.

Day-by-day itinerary

A long but spectacular day. Drive south past Marrakech and climb the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at about 2,260 metres, with stops at viewpoints and Berber villages. With your local guide, explore Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed earthen ksar famous from Gladiator and Game of Thrones. The Atlas Film Studios can be added. Overnight in Ouarzazate. Drive: about 6 to 7 hours including scenic stops.

Follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Skoura oasis and past the Rose Valley, then walk between the towering cliffs of the Todra Gorge. In the late afternoon, catch your first sight of the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi and ride a camel into the sand at sunset to your luxury camp. Dinner is served under the stars. Overnight in a luxury desert camp. Drive: about 6 to 7 hours with stops.

Wake early for sunrise over the dunes. Then spend the day exploring the Sahara: sandboarding, a 4x4 excursion around Erg Chebbi, tea with a nomad family, and Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, whose families trace their roots to West Africa. Quad biking or buggies can be added. Dinner at camp. Second overnight in the luxury desert camp.

Stay: Luxury desert camp

Leave the dunes and head north along the Ziz Valley, with panoramic stops above its long ribbon of palm groves, and a visit to the Erfoud date market when it's running. A fossil workshop in Erfoud can be added. Climb into the Middle Atlas to Midelt, beneath the peaks of Jbel Ayachi, for a short look around town. Overnight in Midelt. Drive: about 5 to 6 hours.
