Is this a private tour?

How difficult are the hikes?

Moderate. You need reasonable fitness for several hours of walking a day on uneven trails with some climbs and river crossings. Your licensed mountain guide adapts the route and pace to your group, so it's suitable for regular walkers, not only experienced hikers.

Where in the Rif do we hike?

In the forests, valleys and villages of the western Rif, within reach of Chefchaouen. Your mountain guide chooses the exact trails according to the season, the weather and your group's fitness.

What should I bring for hiking in the Rif?

Broken-in hiking boots, a daypack, a refillable water bottle, sun protection, layers and a waterproof jacket, as mountain weather changes quickly. Personal hiking gear isn't included.

When is the best time to hike the Rif Mountains?

Spring (March to June) is best, with green valleys, flowing rivers and wildflowers. Autumn (September to November) is also excellent. Summer is warm but cooler at altitude, and winter can bring heavy rain and snow.

Day-by-day itinerary

Your driver meets you at Tangier airport, the ferry port or your hotel. Explore the Kasbah and medina, and look out over the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, a camel ride on Achakkar Beach, a hammam or a sunset café can be added. Overnight in Tangier.

Leave the coast for the Rif Mountains, watching the landscape change from coastal plains to forests, green valleys and ridges. Arrive at your base in the mountains and meet your licensed mountain guide, then share tea with a local family. A sunset ridge walk or cooking with your host family can be added. Overnight in a mountain guesthouse. Drive: about 2.5 to 3 hours.
