Is this a private tour?

When is the best time to see the Ouzoud waterfalls?

Spring (March to May) is best, when snowmelt from the Atlas gives the falls their fullest flow and the valleys are green. Autumn is also lovely and quieter. In summer the pools are perfect for a swim, but arrive early to beat the heat and the day-trippers.

How much walking is involved?

Moderate. The Setti Fatma walk is a short, rocky scramble, and the Ouzoud trail is a well-trodden path with steps down to the base of the falls. Comfortable shoes are enough, and your guide sets the pace, so you can turn back or skip any section.

Can I swim at Ouzoud?

Yes, in the warmer months there's free time to swim in the pools below the falls. Bring swimwear and a quick-dry towel. The boat ride under the spray is included either way.

Is this a good alternative to an Ouzoud day trip from Marrakech?

Yes. Day trips mean six hours on the road and arriving with everyone else. Staying overnight lets you see the falls early and late, without the crowds, and combine them with the Ourika Valley and the Demnate natural bridge at an easy pace.

Day-by-day itinerary

Your driver collects you from your Marrakech riad and within an hour the red city gives way to the High Atlas. Follow the Ourika River past terraced fields and Berber villages clinging to the hillsides, stopping at a women's argan oil cooperative to see the oil pressed by hand. In a family home, share mint tea and see how mountain life really works. At Setti Fatma, your local guide leads a scramble up the valley to the first of its waterfalls. Overnight in the Ourika Valley. Drive: about 1.5 hours.

Leave the valley behind and cross into the Azilal region, where the High Atlas softens into olive groves, red earth and quiet farming villages that see few visitors. Your driver stops wherever the view asks for it. By afternoon you reach Ouzoud, and your guide takes you on a short first walk to the rim of the falls while the light is soft and the crowds have gone. Overnight near the waterfalls. Drive: about 3 hours with stops.

Stay: Ouzoud

Start early, before the day-trippers arrive. With your guide, walk down from the top of the Ouzoud falls, which tumble around 110 metres in tiers, to the pools at the base, keeping an eye out for wild Barbary macaques in the olive trees. Take the traditional boat ride beneath the spray, then enjoy free time to swim in season. On the way back, stop at Imi n'Ifri, the natural rock bridge near Demnate. Overnight in Marrakech. Drive: about 3 hours.
