Itinerary

Day 1

Accommodation

Night 1: Overnight in Marrakech

Your coastal escape begins with an exploration of the vibrant “Red City.” Your guided tour starts at the iconic Jemaa el-Fnaa square, a UNESCO-listed spectacle where you’ll witness storytellers, musicians, and the vibrant chaos of food stalls. From there, you’ll visit the Koutoubia Mosque and its tranquil gardens, followed by the stunning Bahia Palace (entrance included), where you’ll wander through serene courtyards and marvel at intricate Moroccan craftsmanship. The afternoon is dedicated to the labyrinthine souks, where a stop at a spice shop reveals the secrets of Berber herbs and argan oil. The evening is free to enjoy dinner at your leisure.

Day 2

Accommodation

Night 1: Overnight in Essaouira

After breakfast, we leave the intensity of Marrakech behind and drive west towards the Atlantic coast. The landscape transforms from arid plains to the famous argan tree forests, and you may even see goats climbing the trees. Upon arrival in Essaouira, your guide will lead you on a tour of this charming, windswept city. You will explore the UNESCO-listed medina with its blue-shuttered, whitewashed houses, walk along the historic skala (seafront ramparts), and visit the vibrant fishing port, where you can watch the daily catch come in. The famous grilled fish stalls are a must for lunch (not included). The evening is free to enjoy the relaxed, artsy atmosphere of the town.

Day 3

Marrakech

After breakfast and perhaps a final stroll along Essaouira’s vast beach, we begin our return journey. Our key stop is the coastal city of Safi, historically one of the world’s major sardine ports and renowned for its unique, hand-painted pottery. You will visit the pottery quarter to see artisans at work and the historic pottery hill with its striking, colorful ceramics. We then continue back to Marrakech, where the tour concludes in the afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Essaouira known for?
Essaouira is famous for its strong Atlantic winds, making it a world-class destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It’s also known for its well-preserved 18th-century medina (a UNESCO site), vibrant fishing port, and laid-back, artsy atmosphere that has attracted musicians and artists for decades.
The city is nicknamed “Windy Essaouira” for good reason – strong breezes are common year-round, though they’re most powerful from April through August. It’s recommended to bring a windbreaker or light jacket even in summer, and those with long hair might want ties or hats.
Safi has been a pottery center since the 16th century and is particularly famous for its distinctive green and yellow glazed pottery. The traditional methods used here have been passed down through generations, and the Pottery Hill (Colline des Potiers) is where you can see multiple workshops and kilns in operation.
Yes, the beach is beautiful and swimmable, though the water is often quite cold due to Atlantic currents. The main beach is sheltered and generally safe for swimming, but strong currents can occur, so it’s important to heed any warning flags and avoid swimming alone.
The best time is from May to October when the weather is warm and sunny, though windy. Summer temperatures are comfortable, rarely exceeding 25C (77F). Spring and autumn are also pleasant, while winter can be cooler and rainier, though still mild compared to European winters.
